- ABOUT US
While usually there for the first few critical days or weeks, Dads generally have to return to work, often in a different city, making regular visits to the NICU difficult. This can leave Dads with infants in the unit feeling isolated.
The Trust understands that Dads need support too, and we are happy to assist where we can.
The Neonatal Trust (Auckland) organises support sessions “Just for Dads” where they can socialise and discuss issues with fellow expectant or experienced fathers.
When: Second (2nd) Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm
Where: Meeting Room, NICU, Auckland Hospital

Here are some ideas that can help:
• Consider using email, our forums, or another family member (or friend) to keep family and friends up to date.
• Get involved when you can, changing nappies, kangaroo cuddles (skin to skin contact), or preparing milk (if the infant is tube feed). It will help you feel closer to your baby and give your partner some time out.
• Talk to other Dads when you can, the Trust can put you in touch with other Dads who understand what you are going through.
• Understand that your partner is under stress and may need your support more than ever.
• Accept help from others when offered - cooking meals, looking after other children and helping around the house.
“He was a typical man when he left RMH stressed, pissed off and angry and when he came back he was smiley and chatty and laughing – what do you guys do over there - yoga or something?!?”
